Burlington County to continue partnership with Smile New Jersey for dental services for WIC clients

Burlington County Freeholder Mary Ann O’Brien recently announced that the Burlington County Board of Chosen Freeholders has approved another one-year agreement with Smile New Jersey to benefit with clients of the county’s Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program. Smile New Jersey currently provides dental services to children without insurance.

Smile New Jersey offers monthly visits to WIC clients and children are the organization’s main focus. Upon signing the Smile New Jersey charity care application, children without dental insurance receive a screening, cleaning and fluoride treatment.

“What Smile New Jersey does is provide dental services such as exams, cleanings and even x-rays and sealants when needed, to children who are unable to receive those services otherwise,” O’Brien said. “It’s a great program to have and we are thrilled to once again make this service available to our residents.”

New Jersey licensed dentists and hygienists provide the services free of charge.

“There is no cost to the host site to provide the services,” O’Brien said. “Burlington County WIC provides the space where Smile New Jersey sets up to hand out and collect permission slips in advance of visits. This allows WIC clients to receive services on-site.

“Dental disease can have very serious impacts later in life and is possibly one of the most preventable health hazards. We believe that access to health insurance should not inhibit a child’s right to lead strong, healthy lives.” O’Brien said.
